I keep thinking I should not be interested in this film. It looks unusually and unnecessarily violent, and the violence is directed exclusively at women, two things that tend to turn me off. But damned if I’m not intrigued by the Maniac remake. For the most part, I think the POV is what’s got me hooked. The film is told almost entirely through the killer’s eyes (Elijah Wood). It’s a cool concept and, judging by the trailer, it seems to work.
I can only hope the film is meant as a commentary on misogyny (as, it can be argued, was the original), a film about misogyny rather than a misogynist film, but it’s too soon to tell.
The film will be released by IFC but no exact date has been set.
Check out the trailer, but be warned, it’s fairly graphic stuff.
